.About Karaikudi
Karaikudi is located in Sivagangai district between Trichy Rameshwaram High road. It got its name because of the famous plant called "Karai" which is widely spread over this area. Earlier it was a small village in Ramanathapuram district. In 1928 it was changed from Panchayat to Muncipal.The people of Karaikudi played a major role during the Indias freedom struggle. The city was well facilitated with Railways and Roadways in 1930. The educational institutions developed to its peak in 1947, by Allagappar who is the founder of today's Alagappa University.
The famous temple Pillaiyar Patti is 12 km away from Karaikudi. The city is known for Sri Meenakshi-Sundareswarar temple, also known as Sivan Temple which was built during 1872. There is a temple here where there are 108 statues of Ganapathy. Sekkalai is located at north-east of Karaikudi, which was known as "Jain Kunda Puram" 50 years back.
In North-west of Karaikudi is Mutthu Pattinam which is known for Muthu Mariamman Temple. At the Central is Kallukatti where the famous temple Koppudaiaamman is located. Karaikudi the most popular town in Sivaganga District, is situated in Karaikudi Taluk at latitude 107’45” North and longitudes 7846’30” East. The town is in the metre gauge railway from Trichy to Rameswaram. Madurai, Thiruchirappalli and Ramanathapuram are equidistant (about 90 km) from Karaikudi by Road. Area of this town is 13.75 Sq.km. |

The rocks found in the surrounding areas particularly on the western part, are of ancient crystalline type. Clay deposits in the form of calcareous nodules and lime stones are also found in the nearby areas. The soil is hard rod literate not suitable for cultivation. The climate is hot and dry. |

Karaikudi does not have any historical back ground of interest like Sivaganga or Ramanathapuram. The origin of the town is not exactly known. But the settlement must have existed from early 19th century as Sri Koppudayanayagi Amman Temple, the oldest structure in the town traces its history from 1800. |

The town has linked with Chennai, Tiruchirappalli and Rameshwaram by railway. Tiruchirapalli and Ramanathapuram are equidistant (about 98 km.) from Karaikudi by road. |
